The Hero at the Heart of Santa’s Magical Origin Story

Long before sleigh bells echoed across snowy rooftops, before the red suit and reindeer became holiday icons, there was just a boy. A boy with nothing but a loyal dog, a heart full of questions, and a path he never expected to walk. His name? Nicholas of Lycia.

And in The Rise of Nicholas the Noble, the newest middle grade fantasy novel from the creators of The Elf on the Shelf, readers are invited to step into his epic origin story.

Meet Nicholas the Noble, not the Santa Claus we know today, but the brave, curious, and deeply human boy who came before.

Before He Became a Hero

Nicholas is twelve years old when his story begins. He’s sturdy but not yet strong, with wind-tangled brown hair, travel-worn clothes, and a borrowed cloak. When he arrives in this land of fantastical creatures and ancient magic, he is at the edge of death, having been shipwrecked in freezing waters. Nicholas is remarkably human, and that’s exactly what makes him so relatable. Nicholas of Lycia isn’t a superhero. He doesn’t have magical powers, a secret weapon, or a team of sidekicks waiting to help him.

But his most striking feature isn’t what he looks like on the outside. It’s what he carries inside: grief alongside determination with the quiet strength of someone who hasn’t given up, even though he’s lost almost everything that is most important to him.

A Heart in Search of Belonging

Nicholas is more than the central character in this magical adventure. He’s the emotional core. When we meet him, Nicholas is reeling from the recent loss of his parents. Orphaned and alone in the world for the first time, he clings to the only family he has left: Barry, his devoted Saint Bernard.

But even as he grieves, Nicholas holds tight to the values his parents passed down: kindness, curiosity, and quiet courage. They taught him to do what’s right, even when it’s hard. They taught him to honor others and to believe that light can be found in the darkest places.

Nicholas doesn’t see himself as noble. Not at first. But though he’s sometimes unsure of himself, his instinct to help others runs deeper than fear. Whether it’s volunteering to fight for a cause he doesn’t even fully understand yet or charging into battle, Nicholas proves again and again that nobility isn’t something you’re born into. It’s something you choose.

“A choice to be righteous. Good.
Honorable. By choosing these things
you have chosen to behave nobly, Nicholas. . .
You will have to choose to be the chosen one.”

Relationships that Shape Him

At the heart of Nicholas’s story is his bond with Barry, his Saint Bernard companion. Barry is more than just a pet. He’s Nicholas’s confidant, protector, and emotional anchor. The loyalty between them reveals as much about Nicholas as anything he says or does. And when Barry disappears, it is his desire to find him that motivates Nicholas almost more than anything else.

But throughout the novel, Nicholas also forges unexpected relationships with elves, ice gnomes, and other allies he meets along the way. These connections challenge him, support him, and encourage him that he is capable of far more than he could ever imagine. Slowly, these relationships help him discover a place for himself in this new world and his quest becomes about something more in addition to rescuing Barry.

What Makes Nicholas Unique

In the enchanted land of One True North, Nicholas is a bridge between the ordinary and the extraordinary, a link between the World Beyond and the enchanted realm. It’s not just that his fate finds him. It’s that he responds to his fate with both awe and responsibility. The elves of One True North are protectors of the light and power of the Lumistella Stone. And they will surely need Nicholas if they are to protect that light all over the world. Perhaps the boy Nicholas really is the fulfillment of their ancient elfin prophecy:

“A son of Adam, quite noble indeed,
will usher in peace and fight against greed.
The downfall of kingdoms will certainly come
if ever to folly the stone does succumb.”

What makes Nicholas special isn’t just what he does. It’s who he chooses to be. He’s surrounded by magic, but his power comes from within. And he doesn’t give up on those who need him.

Nicholas is the kind of character you want to cheer for, not because he’s perfect, but because he’s trying his best to grow, to learn, and to be brave.
